In order for meat to be halal, the slaughter has to cut at least 2 of the 3 veins in the neck and you have to recite Bismillahi Allahu Akbar when doing the slaughter. Research has shown that this is not happening, rendering the chicken and meat that we consume haram. The ‘halal’ meat industry in the UK is failing to do this for a number of reasons:
Feeding the animals
Chickens are fed meat – typically, chicken heads and other impure feed. Allah has ordered us in the Quran to eat that which is halal and tayyib (pure). This clearly is not tayyib.
Stunning
Abattoirs are using the process of stunning the chicken or sheep, etc. before doing the slaughter. When the chicken is stunned, the stun makes the chicken go into a deep shock. Its brain explodes and the brain particles go all over the body of the chicken – a research has shown that there were bits of the chickens’ brain in the legs, wings, etc. When stunning is carried out about a third of chickens die before the slaughter is even carried out – this renders all those chickens haram! The two third that survive are not tayyib.
Slaughter
When doing the zabah, the person has to recite Bismillahi Allahu Akbar for the slaughter to be halal. In abattoirs, there is a target that has to be met i.e. they have to slaughter several thousands per day. They have a conveyor belt so the chickens go along this belt and there are people who do the zabah. Now, this mechanised process is so quick that it is practically impossible for the person to say Bismillahi Allahu Akbar for every chicken – they get around 1.5 seconds to carry out each slaughter! Imagine how many chickens are slaughtered without saying Bismillahi Allahu Akbar – therefore, these chickens are also all haram.
‘Blessed’ Blades
To overcome the above problem, some abattoirs have gone a step further in ensuring the meat is absolutely, undeniably haram! Instead of having people doing the zabah, they just have a mechanised blade with the words Bismillahi Allahu Akbar written on them. So now the whole process of the slaughter is mechanised and no humans are involved in the zabah – all the chickens done in this way are haram.
One recitation of Bismillahi Allahu Akbar
Another ’solution’ is for the abattoirs to get a ‘moulana’ to come in the morning and say Bismillahi Allahu Akbar once. After this, there is no more Bismillahi Allahu Akbar when doing the slaughtering – again, all the chicken and meat done in this way is totally haram.
The effects of eating haram
The Prophet (SAWS) has said that when a person eats even one morsel of haram food then his ibaadah is not accepted for 40 days! The person’s duas are also not accepted. This is regardless of whether the person eats haram knowingly or unknowingly. In other words, if you consume haram just before Ramadhan, your entire month of fasting is of no use as its all void. If you consume haram before Hajj, then your Hajj will not be accepted. This goes for other forms of Ibaadah as well.
Is it ok for us to accept a butcher’s word that his meat is halal?
When buying meat or chicken, if the butcher claims that his meat is halal, can you take his word for it? The answer is no. If we lived in an Islamic state, only then you can accept his word at face value. In today’s reality, it is a duty for each one of us to research the source of the chicken and meat before purchasing – this means checking up on the butcher, his suppliers, the abattoir etc. and we would have to do this before each purchase! As you can imagine, this would be very difficult.
The Solution
These are the problems facing Muslims today in regards to eating halal. So what is the solution? How can we ensure that what we are feeding ourselves, our families and our children is halal?
Alhamdulillah, there is an organisation set up by the ulaama dedicated to ensuring that the whole process from the slaughtering in the abattoirs to selling the meat in the butchers, is halal and according to Shariah. Most of the staff are volunteers or get a small income. They are dedicated to serving the Ummah and ensure that halal really means halal. They have also been nominated as one of the most stringent halal monitoring committees in the world, Alhamdulillah. The halal food committee in Malaysia have requested this organisation to go and advise them.
This organisation is the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC). They inspect the whole slaughter process everyday. They ensure there is no stunning and the zabah is done correctly. If you want chicken or meat that you can be sure is halal, you should only buy from butchers that are HMC registered or from HMC approved abattoirs. Also, these haram chicken and meat is supplied to takeaways and restaurants. Therefore, do not eat from any food outlet unless it is HMC approved.
For more information on this and to check for a list of registered butchers, abattoirs, take-aways and restaurants, log on to www.halalmc.co.uk. Pass this information on to others and raise the awareness of HMC in your area.

hi there recently my frineds have been telling me that haram food is right to eat due to some hadis they found. i completeley disapprove of that i was wonderin if u can reply to be on the email given above to what is right and what is not and also if u can provide me with a hadis
Your friends are wrong to say that you can eat haram food. I have not come across any hadith thats reflect this. Obviously, there are extreme circumstances where you can eat haram e.g. in a life or death situation but this is not the normal, everyday scenario. Can you please ask your friends to provide the hadith that they refer to.
For your info, I have collated some verses of the Qur’an and Ahadith to show haram food is NOT PERMISSABLE. More info can be found on the HMC website, http://www.halalmc.co.uk.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR A MUSLIM TO STRICTLY CONSUME HALAL?
Consuming Halal is an order of Allah and an essential part of the Islamic faith. Allah has repeatedly emphasised the consumption of Halal in the Qur’an. The following are some examples of such verses:
i. “O Messengers, eat from the pure foods and work righteousness” [Quran 23:51]
ii. “O you who have believed, eat from the pure things which we have provided you” [Quran 2:172]
iii. “O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth (that is) lawful and pure” [Quran 2:168]
iv. “So eat of that (meat) upon which Allah’s name has been mentioned, if you are believers in His verses” [Quran 6:118]
v. “And do not eat that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed it is a grave disobedience”. [Quran 6:121]
By being careless about the dietary laws of Islam a believer puts himself in harms way both in this world and the world hereafter. In this world, due to in taking such a product he deprives himself from having any of his good deeds and duas accepted by his creator while in the hereafter he suffers the greatest loss ever imaginable i.e. refusal from being admitted to Paradise. All this is confirmed in the following Ahadith:
i. Abu Hurairah RA related, “Allah’s Messenger PBUH said: Verily Allah is pure and He accepts only what is pure and indeed Allah has given those orders to the believers, which he has given to the Messengers. He has said, “O Messenger, eat from the pure foods and work righteous”. He also has said: “O you who have believed, eat from the pure things which we have provided you.” Then (the Prophet PBUH) made mention of a man who undergoes a lengthy journey in a state that he is dishevelled and dusty. He spreads his hands towards the sky (calling), “O my lord, O my lord”, however his food is Haram, his drink is Haram, his clothes are Haram and he has been nourished with Haram! So how will his call be answered?” [Muslim]
ii. S’ad RA relates: Allah’s messenger PBUH said “O S’ad purify your food (and as a result) you will become one who’s supplications are accepted. I swear by He in whose hands the soul of Muhammad PBUH lies, verily a servant (of Allah) tosses a Haram morsel in his stomach (due to which) no deed is accepted from him for 40 days” [Tabarani]
iii. Abu Bakr RA narrated that Allah’s Messenger PBUH said “That body will not enter Paradise which has been nourished with Haram” [Baihaqi]
iv. Ka`b Ibn Ujrah relates that the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said, “A body nourished with Haram will not enter Jannah”. [Tirmidhi]
v. Jabir RA reported, Allah’s Messenger PBUH said, “That flesh will not enter Paradise which has grown from Haram, and all that flesh which has grown from Haram, the fire (of hell) is more worthy of it.” [Ahmed, Darimi, Baihaqi]
vi. Abu Hurairah (RA) reports that the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said, “A time will come upon the people wherein a man will not bother what he intakes; whether from Halal source or Haram.” [Bukhari]
In our times, it becomes even more important to ensure the meat and poultry consumed is genuinely Halal due to the excessive deceit, cheat and false labelling of Halal in the industry.
General Qur’anic guidance dictates that all foods are Halal except those that are specifically mentioned as Haram (unlawful or prohibited).
The Qur’an reads:
“O ye who believes! Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you, and render thanks to Allah, if it is He whom ye worship.” [Chapter II, Verse 172]
The unlawful foods are specifically mentioned in the Qur’an, in the following verses:
“He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swine flesh, and that on which hath been invoked any other name besides Allah’s……..” [Chapter II, Verse 173]
“Forbidden unto you (for food) are: carrion and blood and swine flesh, and that on which hath been invoked the name other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been gored to death, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by slaughter) and that which hath been immolated to idols and that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination….” [Chapter V, Verse 3]
Consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants is prohibited according to the following guidance:
“O ye who believe! Intoxicants and games of chance, and idols and divining arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed.” [Chapter V, Verse 9]
Meat is the most strictly regulated of the food groups. Not only are blood, pork, and the meat of dead animals or those immolated to other than Allah strongly prohibited, it is also required that the Halal animals be slaughtered while pronouncing the name of Allah at the time of slaughter.
“Eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, if ye are believers in his revelations” [Chapter VI, Verse 118]
“And eat not of that whereon Allah’s name hath not been mentioned, for lo! It is abomination. Lo! The devils do inspire their friends to contend with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters”. [Chapter VI, Verse 121]
